Performance Powertrains
Our Performance Powertrains online module took place on 1 June 2024.
Discover the techniques used to maximise the efficiency of combustion, hybrid and electric powertrains and understand how systems are used to implement these strategies effectively.
The module included sessions from the following tutors :
Matthew Booth MEng – Principal Engineer
Having started his career at Xtrac in 2009, Matt has progressed into the role of Principal Engineer. His daily responsibilities include leading all engineering aspects of transmission projects, from concept design through to in-vehicle testing and development, to ensure their optimal performance. He is currently involved with Xtrac’s bespoke motorsport transmissions and components for WEC LMH, Formula E and F1.
Mark Preston – Motorsports Director
With a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mark joined Arrows Grand Prix and McLaren F1 before creating the Super Aguri F1 team with Honda, in just 100 days. Mark recently delivered five ABB FIA Formula E (World Championship) Teams and Drivers Championship and is the most successful Team Principal in Formula E. Mark’s new role at Lola Cars is to build the future of this iconic racing brand. They will focus on new “energy carriers” being developed for powertrains of the future with three pillars of battery electric, hydrogen and synthetic fuels.
Albert Ruiz Gracia - Trackside energy management engineer
Albert's motorsport career started with MSc in Motorsport Mechatronics at Cranfield University. After that, he started as a junior performance and strategy engineer in FE team Rokit Venturi Racing (Maseratti as of this season). He then moved to Andretti FE. Currently, Albert's role is a Trackside energy management engineer which, among other things, focuses on optimizing energy consumption and efficiency by working closely with the drivers.
Topics included:
M-Sport Engine Programs
You will gain insight into how to develop successful high performance race engines. You will understand the important factors to consider during a race weekend, as well as testing and race preparation.
Formula E powertrain
Understand the challenges of racing an electric powertrain and how to push its limits of performance. You’ll also find out how teams manage energy regen and deployment strategies throughout a lap.
Transmissions
You will understand gear theory and define gear ratios, as well as hybrid and electric transmission layouts. You'll discover transmissions and differentials as well as types, preload and lubrication.
